Mitral valve regurgitation usually progresses slowly and patients may have no symptoms until complications occur. One of the earliest signs of mitral valve regurgitation is a heart murmur, which can be detected with a stethoscope.

 

Other symptoms may include:

 

- Fatigue, exhaustion,

- Lightheadedness

- Rapid breathing

- Sensation of palpations or rapid heartbeat

- Cough and/or shortness of breath when lying down

- Urination; excessive at night

- Swollen feet or ankles
