Harpoon Medical, Inc. is a medical device company located in Maryland commercializing minimally invasive, image guided medical devices for beating heart mitral valve repair. The technology was developed in the division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The University of Maryland School of Medicine. With the Harpoon device, physicians will be able to access and repair the mitral valve in a beating heart via a small incision without the need for cardiac arrest or cardiopulmonary bypass. The device enters the left ventricle transapically and secures ePTFE neochords to a diseased mitral valve leaflet to eliminate mitral valve regurgitation. Harpoon Medical will transform traditional open heart mitral valve surgery from a complex 3-6 hour operation to a 60-minute procedure and reduce a patient's recovery period from weeks to days.
